h3 - hacker's handheld

The h3 (Hacker's Hand-Held) is a hackable clamshell-format case that can turn an old touchscreen device (smartphone) into a handheld cyberdeck-style device.

At the core of h3 is its use an existing device to power the handheld, rather than forcing the use of new components. This greatly reduces the cost (and thus barrier to entry) and allows for finding new uses for old devices.

The main h3 project encompasses:

• The h3 case - the clamshell case housing the phone and the gadget;
• The gadgets - replacable elements for the bottom half of the shell:
  • Keyboard - a flat, laptop-style (membrane/dome switch) keyboard.
  • Second screen - second phone attachment, which can be used as a screen through GUD.
  • Game controller - an extension of the second screen, providing 3DS-style controller buttons. (The screen portion is optional.)

Both the case and the official gadgets are open hardware, consisting of open PCB designs and 3D-printable components.
